On October 15, 2017, a dialogue session titled Academic Experiences in Political and Academic Work was held, featuring Professor Ali Youssef Al-Shukri as the guest speaker. Professor Al-Shukri is a member of the Iraqi Parliament, former Dean of the College of Law at the University of Kufa, and former Minister of Planning and Finance. The session was attended by young people and academics, focusing on the intersection between academic and political careers. Key Points Discussed: Relationship Between Academic and Political Work: Academic work and political/administrative roles share a common foundation: their connection to public affairs. While academic work can function independently of politics, political work significantly benefits from academic and administrative expertise, particularly in fields like law and political science. Challenges in Iraq: There is a problematic overlap between the academic and political spheres in Iraq, with politics often intruding into academic institutions. This blurs boundaries and creates confusion that needs to be addressed. Case Study: Iraq Future Gathering: The session also explored the establishment and progress of the Iraq Future Gathering, a political initiative founded by Dr. Al-Shukri in 2017. The gathering involves academics and former political leaders, including ex-ministers, who aim to bring academic insights into political practice. The experience of this new political entity was reviewed and evaluated during the session.
