On November 14, the Ishtar Center for Democracy Support organized a discussion session at its headquarters in Najaf, featuring a lecture by former Minister of Higher Education, Professor Dr. Abdul Razzaq Al-Issa. The lecture, titled ‘Challenges of Clean Energy Investment in Iraq,’ gathered researchers, academics, and interested individuals.
Recommendations and key points:
- Iraqi decision-makers should focus on small and intelligent reactors in line with International Nuclear Energy Agency guidelines. For instance, initiating a 2-megawatt reactor capable of producing medical equipment and conducting initial experiments would be more viable than considering large-scale reactors.
- Emphasize the importance of developing reactors tailored for applications in healthcare and agriculture.
- It’s crucial to distinguish between radioactive contamination, particularly focusing on radioactive materials, and radiation stemming from white dust due to war waste. Each scenario requires specific approaches based on its severity.
- Prior to deliberating entry into nuclear reactor technology, Iraq must undertake extensive preparations across scientific, administrative, security, and political domains. These preparatory steps are pivotal.
- Recommend and facilitate investment opportunities and projects utilizing concave mirrors, particularly in harnessing clean energy.
- To address waste management and radioactive contamination, establish central committees within the Prime Minister’s Office, involving representatives from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Health.
